Hiking in Hluhluwe's False Bay area offers a variety of trails, including those within False Bay Park, a part of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park. False Bay Park features both easy, flat trails and more challenging, scenic routes. The area is known for its diverse wildlife and is a popular destination for both mountain biking and hiking.
The Hluhluwe area, particularly the Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park, is one of South Africa’s premier birding destinations, with over 340 recorded bird species. The region's diverse habitats—ranging from floodplains and riverine thickets to woodlands—contribute to its rich birdlife. Notable birding spots include Hilltop Camp, the Umfolozi and Umbombo Trails, and the Hluhluwe River.
False Bay, the widest part of Lake St Lucia, lies between the Nibela and Nhlozi peninsulas. Its diverse habitats—sand forest, savannah, and shoreline—support rich birdlife and small game like antelope and primates. Bird and butterfly enthusiasts will enjoy species such as the African broadbill and pink-backed pelican. Two self-guided trails offer scenic walks. While swimming is unsafe due to hippos and crocodiles, boating and fishing are still possible.
iSimangaliso Wetland Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in KwaZulu-Natal, spans 3280 km² along 220 km of coastline from Maphelane to Kosi Bay. It features eight interlinked ecosystems, including wetlands, dunes, forests, estuaries, and coral reefs. The park protects rare species and habitats, offers exceptional biodiversity, and hosts unique experiences like turtle tracking. It’s the only place where rhinos, elephants, coelacanths, and whales share one remarkable ecosystem.
Hluhluwe Game Reserve in KwaZulu-Natal, established in 1895, offers exceptional Big Five game viewing in scenic, hilly terrain. Spanning 96,000 hectares, it’s renowned for rhino conservation and diverse wildlife, including wild dogs, giraffes, cheetahs, and nyalas. Visitors can enjoy game drives, guided walks, and self-guided auto trails. The reserve features viewing hides overlooking waterholes and amenities like an à la carte restaurant and bar, making it a top wildlife destination.
